The recent events along the southern and eastern Mediterranean has highlighted the hope of democratic upheavals but also the challenges associated with rapid change, as in Libya and Syria. The events have also highlighted Turkey’s role as an emerging leading political and economic power in the Mediterranean, and its potential as a model of a democratic and secular state. How will the events in the region affect Turkey’s role in Europe?

Ambassador Selim Yenel is the Deputy Undersecretary for Political Affairs, Public Diplomacy and Policy Planning. As Deputy Undersecretary the Ambassador’s responsibilities include Policy Planning and he is intimately involved in the crafting of Turkish foreign policy. He has a distinguished record in Turkish diplomacy, with substantial experience from international organizations such as the OECD, the UN, and the EU. Prior to his current position, he served as Ambassador to Vienna, and as Deputy Director-General for EU affairs.
