8th ISDP-AMS Joint Conference, “The Islamic State” and the Situation in the Middle East
Alec Forss
This report summarizes the presentations and discussions from the 8th ISDP-AMS Joint Conference held in Beijing on May 28-30, 2015. This year’s topic was entitled “‘The Islamic State’ and the Situation in the Middle East.” The disorder in the Middle East and the rise of Islamic State (IS), which has seen it control large parts of Iraq and Syria, is a pressing security and humanitarian concern not only for the region but the international community as a whole. Bringing together noted experts from Europe and China, this year’s conference sought to understand the emergence of IS within a broader context and to appraise the effectiveness of strategies to counter it.
